Geriatric Medicine is the specialty concerned with health related problems, physical and mental conditions in older people, including acute and chronic diseases, specially when they may be physically or mentally disabling.
Older persons may be frail and suffer from multiple coexisting conditions, so they benefit from a holistic, person-centered approach. Diseases behave different in aged organisms, may be difficult to diagnose and react different to interventions.
Geriatric Medicine goes beyond organ-centered specialties and puts its focus on the older person who suffers the disease, in a quest to preserve function, personal autonomy and quality of life.
Geriatrics is not defined by patient’s age, but by patient’s needs. It usually cares of those over 65-70 years, but is specially effective in those over 80 years old.
