Traumatology and Orthopaedic Surgery is a medical specialty that treats and studies diseases of the locomotor system. It deals with the problems of the bones, muscles, and joints of the spine and the extremities.
Within Traumatology, fractures and bone injuries are treated. The procedure in these cases can be medical (conservative) or surgical. The first one is the closed reduction, placing bandages, splints or casts and soft or skeletal traction.
In the second case, the surgical, various treatments can be followed:
• Osteosynthesis: Union of the ends of the fractured bone by placing plates and screws or nails.
• External fixator to immobilize the fracture until the definitive treatment of the same.
• Joint replacements.
